Creating Homes Where People Are ‘Free to Be Me’
The RNBT’s Journey with Meaningful Care Matters
Since the start of 2025, The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust (The RNBT) has been working with Meaningful Care Matters (MCM) to bring their acclaimed Butterfly Approach into our two cares homes, Pembroke House in Gillingham and Admiral Jellicoe House in Portsmouth.
The Butterfly model focuses on creating a culture where people are ‘free to be me’, valuing emotional intelligence and the core belief that everyone has a unique story that has meaning and matters. It encourages care providers to see the person, not the task, and to engage with the ‘here and now’ of each resident’s lived experience.
Transforming Spaces and Culture
One of the most visible aspects of the programme has been the reimagining of communal spaces – creating areas of familiarity, from a nostalgic post office corner to a celebration of motorcycling culture, and even a tribute to Portsmouth FC’s rich heritage. These vibrant spaces spark memories, conversations and a sense of belonging.
At Admiral Jellicoe House, the team has also introduced MCM’s Dragonfly Approach, which explores the deeper meanings of life, mindfulness, and wellbeing, particularly in palliative care and end-of-life settings.

Positive Change and Progress
In August 2025, the mid-point review by Meaningful Care Matters’ Managing Director, Peter Bewert, showed encouraging results and meaningful progress across both homes.
There has been a ‘significant shift in culture and care practice’. Staff are creating ‘meaningful moments’ each day and residents are showing greater engagement.
Early indicators suggest that the Butterfly Approach is already improving staff morale, engagement, and retention across both homes. Staff turnover has reduced significantly since the project began, and teams are reporting a stronger sense of purpose and pride in their work. One member of staff reflected, “It’s not just about what we do, but how we make people feel, and that’s what makes this approach so special.”
Looking Ahead
The RNBT is about halfway through this transformative journey, but the impact is already clear: happier homes, more connected care, and teams who are energised by seeing residents thrive.
Our goal remains simple, to create care environments where residents are not defined by their needs but celebrated for their individuality. Through our partnership with Meaningful Care Matters, we’re well on our way to achieving the goal.
