Helping a Naval Family Say Goodbye with Dignity
The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust helps families like Dave Nutter’s say goodbye with dignity and pride
When David ‘Dave’ Nutter passed away suddenly and tragically aged 63 in 2023, his family was faced with both grief and unexpected costs.
The RNBT was able to offer a grant towards funeral expenses, helping to ensure a fitting farewell for a proud member of the Royal Navy family.
His daughter Kathryn expressed her gratitude.
“We wanted to give my father the dignified goodbye he deserved,”
she said.
“The support from The RNBT made that possible.”
This support is just one example of how The RNBT stands beside serving and former naval personnel, and their families, in times of need.
Remembering Dave Nutter, Royal Navy veteran and “No.1 Grandad”
Dave Nutter (1960-2023) was a Royal Navy veteran of 22 years, born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to a family originally from West Yorkshire.
Chief Petty Officer Nutter joined the Royal Navy after leaving school, embarking on a naval career that would span more than two decades. Dave served during the 1990 Gulf War and on warships such as the HMS YORK, HMS FEARLESS, HMS CARDIFF, and HMS INVINCIBLE.
Dave lived in Fareham, where he was known as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He and his wife Carole married in 1986, and had three children – Simon, Kathryn and Mark. Later, he became a proud grandfather to his grandsons, Tristan and Archie, both of whom held a very special place in his heart.
Outside his naval service, Dave was a keen rugby supporter and had been planning to attend an England vs Fiji match at Twickenham with his grandsons in August of 2023. Sadly, this was not to be.
A month prior he was on his way to visit his grandson Archie in hospital, but suffered a fatal heart attack while driving on the M27. With presence of mind, he steered the car to safety before collapsing, saving his grandson Tristan who was travelling with him.
His death was so unexpected there had been no provision set aside for his funeral arrangements. Thanks to the generosity of friends, family, and a grant from The RNBT, the family was able to provide a service for him at Portchester Crematorium.
Dave’s funeral was attended by many, with his coffin covered by the White Ensign and his naval cap placed on top. Naval flag-bearers stood by while the seafarers’ hymn “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” was played.
His sons, daughter, grandsons and many friends spoke of his vibrant character, his humour and the love he gave to his family. His grandson Tristin’s tribute was read aloud, talking about how much his grandad loved rugby, cuddles, sweets and jokes.
Dave’s life embodies service, family and steadfastness – as a naval veteran who carried his values beyond uniform, and as a family man who put the wellbeing of others first. His final act, steering to safety on the motorway, underscored that same protective instinct.
His passing leaves a deep void for his family, his friends and the naval community, but also a strong legacy of kindness, service and love that will endure.

“It needs to be out there how amazing The RNBT is,”
says Dave’s wife Carole.
“It doesn’t matter how long someone was in the Navy or how long ago – they look after them and their loved ones, and that means so much.”
