Members of the Executive department and other key staff at HMS Raleigh have been taken hostage by pirates and forced to walk the plank to raise money for the Royal Navy Benevolent Trust (RNBT). Commander Mick Harris, the Commander of HMS Raleigh, Warrant Officer Master-At-Arms Alex Sharpe and Chaplains, the Reverend David Wylie and Father David Yates were among those forced to jump from the high board into the pool by a pirate, wielding a cutlass. The event was organised by members of the Initial Logistics Officers Course (ILOC) 09/01 to mark the final week of their eight month course carried out at the Defence Maritime Logistics School (DMLS). A group of 20 volunteers agreed to ‘walk the plank’. Spectators were asked to pledge their support as each person plunged towards Davy Jones’s locker. Volunteers also collected their own sponsorship, which included a £140 donation from VT staff to see the company’s Head of Site at HMS Raleigh, Barbara Mann, go in at the deep end. Together with a special charity performance by the ILOC Band in HMS Raleigh’s Wardroom, the group of officers raised £610 for the RNBT. The RNBT is a charitable organisation providing support to serving and ex-members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, and their families, in times of need. Further information about the charity is available online at www.rnbt.org.uk
