Introduction box with text, News & Events – The Trust takes every possible opportunity to engage with our beneficiaries and their families by attending events across the country. The Prince of Wales paid an informal visit to Pembroke House, Gillingham, the care and nursing home of the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust (RNBT) to meet residents, staff and supporters on the 9th of June. The Prince, who has been Patron of the RNBT since 1979, toured Pembroke House, taking in a number of the resident’s rooms and the public areas. His Royal Highness unveiled a plaque to commemorate the day after giving a brief address in which he praised the work of the Trust in caring for serving and retired Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel and their dependants. He recognised that in addition to providing a world class care and nursing facility for up to 50 residents at Pembroke House, the Trust also made grants to individuals totalling just under £2.6 million in the last 12 months helping in nearly 5,000 cases of need or distress. HRH was relaxed and clearly enjoyed the visit despite having spent several days in Normandy as part of the 65th D-Day remembrance ceremonies and travelling to Gillingham via an engagement in Scotland. While making a point of speaking to everyone, he spent more time speaking with D-day veterans now resident in the home. Commander Farrington, Chief Executive of the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust and responsible for the running of Pembroke House, said of the visit: “We are delighted that our Patron has made the time in his busy schedule to visit Pembroke House, particularly at this poignant time of remembering the 65th anniversary of D-Day. The residents, staff and volunteers are united in their delight at meeting His Royal Highness whose visit has raised morale to a new high and left us all with many happy memories.” Pembroke House was originally built in the 1920s, and was greatly extended and modernised in 2000. Each level of the home has its own dining room and day rooms. There is also a library, a bar, two conservatories and landscaped gardens. Additionally, a large day room on the top floor, known as The Bridge, offers magnificent views across the River Medway and the River Thames.
